Using GIMPPortable as alternative to PhotoShop

I recently downloaded GIMPPortable from http://www.portableapps.com and I have to say that it's quite amazing.

GIMP has always been a good free alternative to PhotoShop, but since it's main target was the Linux community, it didn't take off that well among PS users. It can pretty much do everything that PS can do and has some cool extra features.

What's nice about the portable one is that I have it on my USD HDD which I take with me when I go on a photoshoot and if I need to use someone else's PC, I'll still be able to edit my photos

portableapps.com has a lot of useful applications that one can put on a USB memory stick or hard drive and take with you.

Someone on another forum asked if he can open RAM files with GIMPPortable. Since I don't shoot in RAW myself, I never tried it. But, it's never too late to learn anything new, so I'll see what I can do to open RAW files with GIMPPortable.

This thread: http://portableapps.com/node/4819 might shed some light, and I'll give it a try and report back on my findings

I have used Gimp before. Gimpshop is a nice addition worth a look at. But I must say I preferred using Paint.Net. It much easier to use and also have good add ons and tutorials.
But Since I own Photoshop CS3 now I don't think I will go back

Hi Louis,

What exactly is GimShop, and what does it do? Does it have anything todo with e-commerce?

Hi Rudi

GIMPShop is GIMP, but with the menus and options like Photoshop.

It's all graphics editing. No shopping

wow, this looks cool, but I see it's not portable. I suppose one can't have "both sides of your bread buttered"

How well does it handle RAW, louis?

It has all the same features as GIMP. RAW is just like GIMP normally does. (It's just the menu structure that is different)

I use Photoshop these days.
I know there was a plugin for Canon RAW formats that I saw a while back, but that's about what I can remember. (sorry)
